REPATRIATION & RECONCILIATION
Those two concepts will soon be on full display in the Birdtail Sioux Dakota First Nation.
Recently, the leadership of the nearby Birtle Museum made a significant gesture by giving back artifacts from its’ collection that rightfully belong to the Nation.
The items include a beaded necklace and moccasins that date back to the early 1800s.
The Jordan’s Principle Team in Birdtail Sioux is working towards properly storing and displaying these treasured items.
They also plan to honour the Birtle Museum and the families in Birdtail who are connected to the artifacts with a special ceremony on May 9.
The repatriation of cultural property is an important part of acknowledging the unjust ways that First Nations were treated in the past.
Today, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) joins our Dakota relations in Birdtail Sioux in thanking the board and staff at the Birtle Museum for this beautiful gesture and for playing their part in meaningful reconciliation with their Dakota neighbours.
