Swan Shannacappo wins second term as Grand Chief

Morris Swan Shannacappo was elected to a second term as Grand Chief of the Southern Chiefs' Organization with a first ballot victory on June 17
"We received a strong vote of confidence to continue with the directions we have been taking. The Chiefs want us to continue what we are doing," Swan Shannacappo said following his win. Ken Whitecloud was tthe only other candidate.
Key issues SCO has been pursuing include Child and Family Services, environmental damage that can be linked to the Manitoba Hydro and the Manitoba government, the call for governments to conduct an environmental audit of how SCO Nations have been affected, and Treaty and Indigenous Rights.
With CFS, Grand Chief Swan Shannacappo has been a strong advocate of developing child care systems that are truly Indigenous and not copied from the non-Indigenous systems of the province.
The election was held at the Pine Creek First Nation.
